It was a day of highs and lows at McArthur Island on Saturday as Kamloops United FC hosted Burnaby FC during Slurpee Cup weekend. With both League1 BC squads taking the field on a stormy day — the KUFC women’s team delivered a performance to remember.
The women came out flying, putting together their most complete showing of the season. With goals from Raiya Rumo, Norah Bell, and Taylor Miller the Women's side had an early 3-0 cushion. A lightning delay midway through the match added some tension, but the group returned focused and determined. Burnaby pulled two goals back late, including a penalty, but Kamloops held firm to secure a 3-2 victory — their first win of the season. Sisters, Erin and Cara Freeman were both named in the League1 BC Team of the Week for their performances.
Head coach Haley Bartram praised the group’s effort and growth:
“The players showed up to play and earned this win. We made key adjustments, and they stayed sharp and committed right through to the final whistle. Moving forward, we need to maintain this mindset, stay disciplined, and keep pushing ahead.”
On the men’s side, KUFC suffered their first setback of the season. A first-half goal from Burnaby proved to be the difference in a 1-0 loss — a tightly contested match where Kamloops had spells of pressure but couldn’t find the equalizer. Despite the result, the men remain level at the top of the League1 BC standings with 13 points through six matches alongside this week's opponent, TSS Rovers.
KUFC now looks ahead to a key road test next weekend as both squads travel to face TSS Rovers at Swangard Stadium on Saturday, May 25.
